I have been teaching piano for 45 years and still enjoy it very much. I regularly attend piano teachers workshops and seminars at UWA and at Zenith and come home with new ideas. I encourage students to sit exams .... AMEB, both Classical and Piano for Leisure ... as well as perform in eisteddfods. I have three studio concerts per year as I believe in developing practice skills which enable students to be able to perform when asked, even though they might be nervous at first.
I have taught up to 8th grade as well as prepared students for A.Mus.A. I have taught theory up to 4th grade. When students do ATAR music, the theory component is often taught in school. Although not a ‘jazz teacher’, I encourage students to play jazz style pieces and learn more about improvisation from real jazz pianists. I encourage playing by ear as well as reading from chord charts and always take students through a coordinated sight reading programme. However, they all have to do ‘aural tests’ in their exams and learn to sing in tune from the beginning.
